PRIDE

One of the deadliest behaviors that I encounter daily is the behavior of pride, the kind of pride that says “I can do this in my own power.”
I believe in an unseen spiritual world of good and evil. I do not profess to know how the battle is waged.  In the Old and New Testament this unseen world of evil is defined as inferior to God but superior to man. If I operate solely in my power and fail to ask God to intervene, then I go to battle with the war already lost.

TODAY

This is the beginning of a new day. What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever. Lord I pray that I do not regret the price I paid for today.

TODAY

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is Yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its fault and blunders, its aches and pain. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with its possible adversaries, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow’s sun will rise. either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds….but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.

This leaves only one day….Today. Anyone can fight the battles of just one Day; it is only when you and I add the burdens of Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down. It is not the experience of Today that drives us mad…it is remorse or bitterness for something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring.

UNCOMFORTABLE

Doing something different, change, is changing the mind and then to move forward with actions. Some have attempted to change a habit but never the heart and then wonder why things are remaining the same. If we change, it is bound to hurt, because it acknowledges that our right has been wrong. It is bound to be uncomfortable, because it means a complete reversal of life. That is why change is difficult, because most people wish to avoid discomfort even in the midst of deadly choices.

Thomas Merton Prayer (Paraphrased )

Lord,

We may have no idea, where we are going. We may not see clearly the road ahead. We cannot know for certain where it will end, nor do we know ourselves enough to be certain that we are following Your will and not our own, but we believe that our desire to follow You, does please You. In that desire, we know that You will lead us on the journey of Your making. Though we may not see it clearly, we will trust You always, even in those times that we feel lost. We will not fear, for You are always with us and will never leave us to face our perils alone.

The assurance of right

“It is good to have the assurance that you are right, but that is no reason why you should have the conviction that everyone else is wrong.”

It is so easy to write, so easy to say, but at times so difficult to live.
