I was waiting for a therapist that I was going to train. While in the lobby, there was an elderly man with a mental disorder between the ages of 75-80. He was constantly shaking a baby rattler while holding it very close to his ear and the noise was becoming irritating to everyone in the room. I was not able to hear myself think and I thought that is exactly why he shakes the rattler, to drown out the voices of thought. What were those voices that brought such pain?
A thought came to me that we are not so far removed from our own rattlers. We may not be using an instrument so obvious but escaping our pain just the same. The method he used seem to work for him but reality is that he will be tied to the rattler for the rest of his life unless he seeks help or someone seeks help for him. If nothing changes then he will continue to shake his rattler and annoy everyone around him. Sound familiar?
